Africa Oyé have announced a FREE day of family entertainment taking place this September in Liverpool.

Africa Oyé: ChamaJama, will feature live musical performances, dance workshops, storytelling, arts and crafts, face-painting and much more, across two three-hour party sessions at District & Yard in the city’s Baltic Triangle.

The two parties will take place from 11:45am-3pm and 3:45pm-7pm respectively on Sunday 12th September. Entrance is free, with tickets required to guarantee entry and jump any potential queues.

Amongst the entertainment will be Taking Flight, a performance from Movema featuring an incredible welcome from their ‘Sankofa Bird’ – a costume made by Liverpool’s own Lantern Company; a showcase from performance art theatre company, Staged Kaos; live music from Anwar Ali & Dave Owen singing a range of children’s songs in Swahili and English; plus workshops including dance and capoeira.

For those that are sorely missing the free annual Africa Oyé festival in Sefton Park, which has sadly been postponed this year due to the pandemic, Artistic Director Paul Duhaney is hoping that ChamaJama can help scratch that itch.

“One of the biggest successes of the last ten years at Oyé has been the expansion of the Oyé Village, where we host two days of free workshops and a range of family entertainment at the festival. We wanted to re-create that vibe in a city centre venue that we knew we could operate in safely, and that’s how ChamaJama was born.

We’ve teamed up with the likes of Staged Kaos and Movema, who have been regular performers and practitioners at the festival over the last few years, and I’m really excited about the entertainment we’ve put together for our younger audience and family members who haven’t had the chance to celebrate with us in Sefton Park this year”.

As well as the live performances and workshops throughout the day, the parties will also feature face-painting, arts and crafts, storytelling, children’s entertainment, food from Eat Up Gud and DJ sets from collective, Girls Don’t Sync.

Africa Oyé: ChamaJama will take place at District & Yard on New Bird Street (L1 0BW) in Liverpool on Sunday 12th September. The day will be separated into two three-hour party sessions, both completely free to attend, but tickets will be required to guarantee entry.
